Fire pits are a great way to enjoy the outdoors and gather with friends and family, but it’s important to follow some simple fire pit safety tips to ensure everyone has a good time and stays safe. Here are 5 simple fire pit safety tips everyone should know.

        1. Choose a Safe Location & Set it Up

Before you start roasting marshmallows and enjoying the warmth of your fire pit, it’s crucial to consider where you’re setting it up. The first step to a safe fire pit experience is choosing the right location. You want to make sure that the area you choose is at least 10 feet away from any structures, trees, or flammable materials like bushes or dry grass. This is important because it reduces the risk of a fire spreading and causing harm.

It’s also essential to avoid placing your fire pit on a wooden deck or any other combustible surface. Instead, choose a level, non-flammable surface like concrete or brick. The reason for this is that wood, plastic, or other flammable materials can easily catch fire, causing extensive damage. Plus, an unsteady surface can increase the chances of the fire pit tipping over, causing injuries or fires.

When setting up your fire pit, always prioritize safety by following fire pit safety guidelines, choosing a location that’s far from any flammable objects and placing it on a stable, non-combustible surface. This way, you can enjoy your fire pit without worrying about accidents or harm to yourself, your loved ones, or your property.

        2. Say No to Gasoline and Other Flammable Liquids

Using the right fuel is key to enjoying a safe and cozy fire pit experience. It’s important to never use gasoline or any other flammable liquids to start or stoke your fire. These substances can cause dangerous flare-ups or explosions, which can result in serious harm or even death. So, it’s always better to steer clear of them.

Instead, choose dry, seasoned firewood that’s been stored in a dry location for at least six months. Softwood, like pine or spruce, burns hot and fast, making it perfect for quick, intense fires. On the other hand, hardwoods like oak or maple burn slower and produce less smoke, making them ideal for longer, more relaxed fires.

        Outdoor Fire Pit Covers

If you’re not sure what type of wood to use, don’t hesitate to ask your local firewood supplier and outdoor fire pit covers provider for recommendations. They’ll be able to guide you towards the right type of wood and the best fire pit covers for your needs. This way, you can sit back and relax, knowing that you’re enjoying a cozy and safe fire pit experience.

        3. Keep a Fire Extinguisher or Bucket of Water Nearby

No matter how careful you are, accidents can still happen, so it’s always better to be prepared. Having a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water nearby is a great way to stay safe. In case of an emergency, you can quickly extinguish the fire before it gets out of control.

When choosing a fire extinguisher, make sure it’s rated for Class A, B, and C fires. This means it can put out fires caused by wood, gasoline, and electrical equipment. It’s also essential to keep the fire extinguisher or bucket of water close to the fire pit, but not too close so that it could get knocked over.

Remember, time is of the essence when dealing with fires, so it’s crucial to act fast. If a fire starts to get out of control, don’t hesitate to use your fire extinguisher or bucket of water to put it out. Even a few seconds can make a big difference in preventing a small fire from becoming a massive blaze.

        Ensure everyone’s safety, including you!

        4. Keep Children and Pets Away from Fire Pits

Children and pets can be drawn to the warm glow of a fire pit, but it’s important to remember that fire pits are covered with proper large fire pit covers and are not a play area. It’s essential to supervise children and pets at all times and ensure they stay a safe distance away from the fire. Teaching them about fire pit safety and explaining why it’s dangerous to get too close can help prevent accidents.

To keep your children and pets safe, make sure to keep any toys or other items away from the fire pit. The last thing you want is for something to accidentally fall into the fire and cause a dangerous situation. Always keep a watchful eye on children and pets and make sure they stay at least three feet away from the fire pit.

Additionally, it’s essential to keep children and pets from running around the fire pit. Running and playing near the fire pit can lead to accidents and injury, so it’s best to designate a safe play area away from the fire pit. When your pit is in no use, cover that with a large or small fire pit covering your pit as per the size.

        5. Ensure Your Fire Pit is Completely Extinguished

When you’re ready to put out the fire, it’s important to do it safely and correctly. Don’t just pour water on the fire and leave it, as this can create hot coals that can reignite later. Instead, use a fire poker or shovel to spread out the embers and ash, making sure they’re fully extinguished. This helps cool down the fire. Lastly cover them with waterproof fire pit cover, ensuring that all the embers are no longer burning.

Next, pour water over the fire pit until you no longer hear any hissing or sizzling sounds. This step is essential as it ensures that the fire is fully out, and there are no hot spots that could reignite. Use enough water to fully saturate the embers and be careful not to splash the water as this can cause hot embers to fly out of the fire pit.

Finally, cover the fire pit with a lid or other non-flammable material. This prevents any stray sparks or embers from escaping and causing a fire. You must go with safety ensured fire pit covers that are customized for it specifically. Remember, pits & bbq covers are safe to use only after you put out the fire properly.

By following these simple fire pit safety tips, you can enjoy your fire pit with peace of mind and ensure everyone stays safe. Remember to always choose a safe location, use the right fuel, keep a fire extinguisher or bucket of water nearby, supervise children and pets, and extinguish the fire properly.

For an additional layer of security, you can find various types of customized covers like round fire pit covers, rectangle fire pit covers, and triangle fire pit covers. With a little care and attention, your fire pit can be a safe and enjoyable addition to your outdoor living space.
